"In the architectural guide to the capital city of the GDR, the old Hungarian embassy was listed as the second building - after the Brandenburg Gate. lt dated from the short period when Eastern European architecture was in step with world architecture. The Aluminium and glass facade designed in 1965 in the international style by Karl-Ernst Swora and Rainer Henslik in cooperation with the Hungarian architects Endre Koltai and László Kovácy represented many things, but not local traditions." The Hungarian government applied for demolition in 1998. "The new embassy will now occupy only half of the land. The building on the corner of Unter den Linden and Wilhelmstrasse is being built by the Budapest architect Adam Sylvester who won the national competition. In his design, the social rooms are situated in the two storeys below the office storeys. The facades, which are clad with grey-yellow polygranite and adorned with hand-made, green varnished ceramic tiles, comply with the local design regulations. The architecture borrows elements from secessionist architecture which was in fashion at the beginning of the 20th century when Hungary was still in the multi-ethnic state of the "royal and imperial monarchy" and striving for independence." source : Ulf Meyer, Bundeshauptstadt Berlin, Jovis-Verlag | ||
